While much of the attention goes toward big red carpet moments during award shoes, things really heat up behind the scenes inside the venue once the ceremony starts, and the Footwear News Achievement Awards 2024 were no exception.

The awards ceremony took place at Cipriani South Street on Dec. 4, in New York City and the biggest and most important names in the shoe industry were present to honor this year’s honorees which included Martha Stewart, A$AP Rocky, Kenneth Cole, New Balance and more.

For 38 years, the annual FN Achievement Awards — often called the “Shoe Oscars” — have celebrated the style stars, best brand stories, ardent philanthropists, emerging talents and industry veterans. The 2024 event is supported by sponsors Listrak, Marc Fisher, Nordstrom and Vibram.

There were some emotional moments from presenters, touching speeches from the honorees, the famous guest mingling and more fun surprises like Rihanna making her way to the stage. Take a look at some of the behind the scenes moments you may have missed and as the stars mingled and celebrated one another at FN’s annual event.

It was a full circle, and emotional, moment for the couple as A$AP Rocky accepted the Collaboration of the Year Award with Puma — eight years after Rihanna stood on the FNAA stage to accept the Shoe of the Year award for her Puma Fenty Creeper.

Rihanna couldn’t have been a more supportive cheerleader during Rocky’s big night. She proudly brought his FN cover on stage when he asked the entire Puma team to join him for his big moment. And a few minutes earlier, she captured Rocky’s remarks on her cell phone from the audience. After the event wrapped, Rihanna and Rocky greeted the crowd, posing with Icon honoree Martha Stewart, Lifetime Achievement Award winner Kenneth Cole and many others.

Perhaps the night’s best photos came during the couple’s turn in FN’s portrait studio. Check out all the action from the big night at Footwearnews.com

It’s the biggest night in footwear. FN on Wednesday is celebrating the 38th FN Achievement Awards (FNAAs), the industry’s most-anticipated event of the year. Best known as the “Shoe Oscars,” the star-studded red carpet and awards gala recognizes footwear’s most influential names, standout moments, biggest brand stories, ardent philanthropists, emerging talents and industry veterans.

The 38th annual awards ceremony were held Dec. 4 in New York.

Read along to see a full list of winners — and some of their most notable quotes — from the biggest night in shoes.

Company of the Year: New Balance

Presenter: Gabby Thomas

New Balance couldn’t miss in 2024. Both its heritage and collaboration sneakers topped every must-have list, it scored major Olympic moments with partners like Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas, and now, thanks to a new WNBA deal, New Balance will take a key role in one of the hottest sports leagues in America.

Quote for the event: “The teamwork that is exhibited across our company is the key reason why we are here tonight,” Preston said. “It’s a fearlessly independent mindset that we operate from being privately held that we think allows us that opportunity.”

Brand of the Year: Larroudé

Presenter: Emily DiDonato

During a time when many independent designers have closed or scaled back their businesses, Larroudé has defied the odds, racking up $30 million in sales in 2023, less than three years since its launch in 2020. Chief creative officer Marina Larroudé and her husband, chief executive officer Ricardo Larroudé, honed a successful strategy built around buzzy collaborations, product freshness and a faster DTC model.

Quote from the event: “I want to celebrate that theres a way to do things differently,” said Ricardo Larroudé, financier and business operator of Larroudé. “There is a way to do shoes yourself. If you do that, you can take care of the people who are doing the shoes for you.”

Emerging Talent Award: Philéo Landowski

Presenter: Alissia

At just 22 years old, French designer Philéo Landowski has quickly established a reputation as a go-to creative voice in footwear, collaborating with Comme des Garçons, Salomon, Adidas and many others. Additionally, his namesake unisex brand has grown over 10 seasons, now distributed in 14 countries with close to 40 doors, including Kith and Dover Street Market.

Quote from the event: “Let’s make this world a better place, one idea at a time,” said Philéo Landowski.

Brand of the Year: On

Presenter: Law Roach

The Swiss athletic brand continues its strong standing in the ultra-competitive running market, growing global sales 24 percent in the first half of this year to 1.08 billion Swiss francs (or $1.24 billion at current exchange). And its already red-hot fashion cred got an additional boost this year from its collaboration with Loewe and a new partnership with actress and style influencer Zendaya.

Hall of Fame: Dave Powers

Presenter: Jean-Luc Diard

Dave Powers retired from his role as chief executive officer of Deckers Brands in August, capping off an incredible 12-year run with the company. He joined Deckers as president of direct-to-consumer in August 2012, rising through the ranks to become CEO in 2016. Under his tenure, Deckers experienced explosive growth, led by its Ugg and Hoka businesses. For its last fiscal year, the company scored $4.3 billion in sales.

Quote from the event: “Stay hungry, stay humble and be kind,” Powers said. “And that formula works every day.”

Icon Award: Martha Stewart

Presenter: Michael Atmore

In 2024, Martha Stewart once again proved she’s unstoppable, from her starring role with Snoop Dogg at the Paris Olympics to the launch of her 100th book to her viral “Netflix” documentary. Stewart also has been expanding her partnership with Skechers. In October, she appeared on QVC to promote her new collection with the brand and regularly models the kicks on Instagram.

Quote from the event: “For me, it’s a good thing to be with a company that’s growing and expanding and becoming an important part of the footwear world,” Stewart said.

Launch of the Year: Sneex

Presenter: Amy Griffin

She already built a billion-dollar brand from the ground up. Now Spanx founder Sara Blakely is disrupting the footwear industry with her Sneex brand. The buzzed-about launch in August certainly got people talking. And the shoes gained a place on the coveted Oprah’s Favorite Things holiday list (likely with help from super fan Gayle King). Blakely’s patented design features a sneaker-stiletto hybrid (cheekily called hy-heels) that’s made in Spain and features a 78mm heel. The goal of the design is to address major pain points in a traditional high heel.

Quote from the event: “A thing or two I love about my mom is that she cares so much about other women, she also knows what to say when you are feeling down,” Tepper Itzler, daughter of Sneex founder Sara Blakely.

Style Influencer of the Year: Angel Reese

Presenter: Tobe Nwigwe

After a successful run playing college basketball at LSU that included a national championship, Angel Reese entered the WNBA in April to tremendous fanfare. Reese has also made inroads in the world of high fashion, attending industry events like the Met Gala, the CFDA Fashion Awards, a pre-Olympics event at Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Her love of fashion has manifested itself most notably with Reebok, the athletic brand she has been aligned with since 2023, when they launched the Reebok by Angel collection in August.

Quote from the event: “I’m 22 years old, I’m still figuring life out, but this is just the beginning,” Reese said. “I’ll be having a signature shoe with Reebok coming out in 2026.”

Hall of Fame: Susan Itzkowitz

Presenter: Marc Fisher

In 2004, Susan Itzkowitz partnered with Marc Fisher to launch a new shoe venture, which has grown into a powerful player in the fashion footwear business, encompassing 14 brands, including licensed collections for Calvin Klein, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger, Hunter and others. And as a longtime board member for Two Ten Footwear Foundation, she has spearheaded efforts to increase representation and opportunities for women in the industry.

Quote from the event: “Iv’e learned that while hard work is absolutely essential, striving for balance, however elusive it may seem, is just as important,” Itzkowitz said.

Designer of the Year: Edgardo Osorio, Aquazzura

Presenter: Nina Garcia

In an era when many independent shoe designers are facing significant challenges and have scaled back, Aquazzura founder and creative director Edgardo Osorio is forging ahead. His 12-year-old brand continues to drive growth with retail expansion in key markets. And Aquazzura has become a red-carpet mainstay, with everyone from Beyoncé and Meghan Markle to Angelina Jolie wearing the brand this year.

Quote from the event: “We might just be creating shoes, but we can make someone smile, one step at a time,” Osorio said.

Retailer of the Year: JD Sports

“Bigger is better” seems to be the approach for U.K.-based retail company JD Sports. In addition to opening 85 new stores in the first half of this year, it completed its acquisition of American chain Hibbett in July, which added 1,179 stores to the total portfolio and made North America its largest geographic market. As it works to transition Finish Line stores to JD Sports locations, the company is poised to grow its U.S. mindshare even further.

Quote from the event: “We will do $6 billion in the U.S. this year from nothing in 2018,” said JD Sports CEO Régis Schultz.

Collaboration of the Year: A$AP Rocky x Puma

Since Rocky joined Puma late last year as the creative director for the brand’s F1 partnership, the rapper has incorporated motorsport design elements across all of his offerings. In a series of releases this year, A$AP Rocky and Puma delivered multiple sell-out distressed versions of the Inhale sneaker and a highly imaginative, 3D-printed edition of the Mostro shoe.

Quote from the event: “The thought of me being with Puma and making collaboration of the year, I didn’t think that was really possible. And look at us now,” said A$AP Rocky.”

Icon Award for Social Impact: Skechers

Presenter: Brooke Burke

The company will be honored for its multi-faceted philanthropic efforts, most notably the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, which has made an incredible impact on the lives of children with special needs and the broader public education sector over the past 16 years. In addition, Skechers has been a huge supporter of animal welfare, donating millions through the Bobs brand to help shelter pets. And, of course, there’s no bigger supporter of the Manhattan Beach community than Skechers.

Quote from the event: “We know we compete with a number of you on a large scale,” said Skechers COO David Weinberg. “We’d like to cooperate and offer anybody the opportunity to partner with us to do more to give back to the community.”

Lifetime Achievement Award: Kenneth Cole

Presenter: Donna Karan

For more than four decades, Kenneth Cole has been committed to fashion with a mission. Using his eponymous brand’s powerful platform, he has tirelessly championed numerous social justice movements, including HIV/AIDS awareness, gun control, climate change and, most recently, ending mental health stigmas. His early efforts created a model that others have since followed.

Hall of Fame: Tacey Powers

Presenter: Jamie Nordstrom

Tacey Powers joined Nordstrom in 1981, starting on the sales floor and working her way up to the executive level, where she now serves as executive vice president and general merchandise manager for shoes. In addition to overseeing the retailer’s stores in the U.S., she also has been committed to mentorship and giving back to the industry as a board member for Two Ten Footwear Foundation and Footwear Retailers and Distributors of America.

Quote from the event: “To my Nordstrom team: I work with a group of amazing people who bring joy and their special talent to work everyday,” Powers said. “I believe we have some of the best merchants in the business.”

Person of the Year: Bjørn Gulden, Adidas

Presenter: Billie Jean King

Since rejoining Adidas in early 2023 as its chief executive officer, Bjørn Gulden has helped steer the German athletic giant through a remarkable turnaround. An inventory cleanup and new hyperlocal strategy helped improve financials faster than anyone expected. And when its “terrace shoes” exploded in popularity, the company was ready to capitalize on the demand

Quote from the event: “As I said last year when Nike was here — they’re not here this year, which is funny; It was a joke, it was a joke — I said we had a lot in the pipeline,” Gulden said. “And when you have 75 years of history, you have a lot in the pipeline. So to the people in the US, China, in Mexico and wherever, they should have the prize.”

Snoop Dogg presented the Icon Award to his bestie Martha Stewart tonight at the 2024 FN Achievement Awards held in New York.

Tastemaker, businesswoman, writer and television personality, Stewart has donned many hats throughout her impressive career thus far. Even in the world of footwear, she has made a name for herself via numerous collaborations with brands like Skechers, Easy Spirit and Aerosoles.

Stewart has become a household name for many, especially following the release of her first how-to book in 1982 titled “Entertaining.” The star is also notable for her eponymous namesake QVC lines of clothing, kitchen supplies, gardening decor and home goods over the years.

This isn’t the first time the pair have graced the aptly dubbed “Shoe Oscars” stage. The duo attended the FN Achievement Awards back in 2023. Stewart presented the Person of the Year award to Michael Greenberg, president and co-founder of Skechers. During her speech, Stewart was joined onstage by her rapper BFF, who made a surprise appearance that night.

Both Stewart and Dogg have extensive collaborative collections with the Skechers brand. “It’s doing so well,” Dogg said, adding, “I was thinking that maybe we should do a commercial for Super Bowls.” — The dynamic duo starred in Skechers’ Super Bowl commercial in 2023. Each celeb-backed collection is imbued with comfort and style.

The tastemaker’s personal footwear game for red-carpet events includes neutral and metallic gold pointed-toe pumps, along with various sandals, hailing from her go-to shoe brand Manolo Blahnik. The “Martha Knows Best” host has also donned styles from notable brands like Christian Louboutin, Celine and Valentino as well.

Repping her ever-popular collaboration with Skechers, the television personality slipped into an ultra-cozy pair of her Pier-Lite My Reflection wedges in a “Mocha” colorway. Retailing for $75 via the brand’s website, the footwear style includes Skechers‘ breathable patented Stretch Fit mesh knit uppers adorned with eye-catching rhinestones throughout. The lofty wedge midsole provided drama and comfort.

Stewart first collaborated with Skechers back in 2023. The pair released a capsule collection titled “A Day in the Life of Martha.” The collection included wearable sandals, slides and Skechers’ ever-popular slip-ins.

Shining bright, Stewart was red carpet-ready in a gilded look. Her high-shine ensemble consisted of a long ornate metallic gold jacket embossed with a geometric print. Her jacket was layered over top of a muted gold sequin sweater and coordinating metallic gold trousers.

Stewart is known to keep things exciting when it comes to footwear. She loves to elevate an outfit with a peep-toe platform from Robert Clergerie, for example, having worn many iterations of the style. She selected them to wear to the FNAAs in 2023 as well, when she took the stage to present Michael Greenberg, co-founder and president of Skechers, with the Person of the Year award. She was joined on stage by surprise guest Snoop Dogg; the longtime friends both serve as Skechers partners.

On Dec. 4, Martha Stewart will be honored with the Icon Award the 38th annual FN Achievement Awards. Below is a cover story from the magazine’s Dec. 2 print issue about the trailblazer’s incredible year.

When FN went in-depth with Martha Stewart for a June 2023 cover story, the entrepreneur opened up about her aversion to an oft-overused label — legend.

“Legends are dead. I would much rather be an icon,” Stewart said emphatically.

Few people embody the word as perfectly as Stewart, the original influencer who has an inherent talent for reinventing herself again and again.

Now, as she prepares to accept the Icon Award at the 2024 FN Achievement Awards, Stewart ponders her own definition of the term. “To me, an icon is a living person who has accomplished something extraordinary during their lifetime,” the octogenarian said. “My icons are adventurous, take risks and are forward thinking.”

Stewart is describing herself: After all, it was just 18 months ago that she made history as Sports Illustrated Swimsuit’s oldest cover model, a moment that was hard to top. But in 2024, the image maker again proved she’s unstoppable, from her starring role at the Paris Olympics with Snoop Dogg (her bestie and fellow Skechers ambassador) to the launch of her 100th book (“Martha: The Cookbook”). And recently, her viral “Netflix” documentary has had just about everyone buzzing.

In today’s social media era, when fame has never been more fleeting, Stewart understands how to keep fans highly engaged — and much of her power lies in her ability to look ahead.

For example, as some people are still discovering her film, Stewart — who was openly critical about certain aspects of it — is already talking about “Martha 2.” “There’s still more to tell,” she said last month during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

The story she’s told so far — the incredible rise, the dramatic fall and the illustrious comeback — has certainly surprised and delighted viewers, especially ambitious young women who are looking for a role model during a turbulent time.

“Watching the Martha Stewart documentary and she is just a delightful bad ass bit** [who] gets shit done,” wrote one Threads user.

Said another: “This Martha Stewart documentary was IT! I had tears in my eyes knowing how the world can be cruel to successful women. She has lived so many lives, what an ICON!”

The attention around the documentary — which has personal new revelations about Stewart’s childhood and marriage, as well as her time in prison — has helped drive demand for “Martha: The Cookbook.” It was released in November, more than four decades after Stewart’s first book, “Entertaining.”

“What I think people like about my books are the recipes, photographs and stories that are evocative, personal and inclusive. Creating an ambiance and environment that speaks to the food is very important for the visuals,” she said.

In this digital age where online recipes are ubiquitous, Stewart is immensely proud of the fact that her cookbooks remain a mainstay in American kitchens — and continue to influence chefs everywhere.

“I went to a big Christmas party last year and noticed a huge mound of butter,” she recalled. “I quietly laughed to myself as the ‘butter mound’ was featured in ‘Entertaining.’ Talk about timeless.”

She Never Stops Surprising

“You can always work a little bit harder and maybe get to your goal a little bit faster. I work 24/7,” Stewart said at FN’s June 2023 “Women Who Rock” event.

That’s not much of an exaggeration: In the span of a frenetic few days last month, she held court at the Louis Vuitton store opening in New York, traveled to Charleston, S.C., to celebrate her new book in front of a crowd of 1,200 people, sat down for an on-stage iHeartRadio interview, toasted a friend’s book launch at The Carlyle and appeared on “The Today Show” to serve up her brioche stuffing-filled roasted pumpkin. (The travel lover later revealed she was skipping Thanksgiving turkey this year and taking her grandchildren to Rome during the holiday instead.)

While she’s been spending much of her time promoting the book and documentary, Stewart also continues her other pursuits, including a burgeoning partnership with Skechers. The entrepreneur has visited the company’s Manhattan Beach, Calif., headquarters several times, furthering her education about the business of footwear.

“I really admire that Skechers is a family company with Robert Greenberg, the patriarch, his son Michael and many other family members. Everyone there is considered family. I like them because they are innovators,” she said. “Designing a line of comfortable and useful footwear with Skechers has been a challenge and pleasure.”

Michael Greenberg lauded Stewart for fully committing to everything she does.

“Martha isn’t just wicked smart and creative — she’s incredibly funny and fearless as a person. A true icon on every level,” said Greenberg. Looking ahead, the partners are planning to expand Stewart’s Skechers collection internationally.

“She is truly unstoppable. Her ambition knows no bounds, matched only by her pursuit of perfection,” Greenberg said.

Strong business partners have been crucial to Stewart’s recent success — especially Marquee Brands, which in 2019 acquired the Martha Stewart nameplate from Sequential Brands Group.

Together with Marquee, Stewart is working on her next projects, including a collection of gardening tools. Her empire already spans beauty, bedding, crafts, fashion, food and beverage, restaurants, home décor, kitchen, office, pet and wellness. Up next: a retail project in Dubai.

“Martha doesn’t just set the standard — she redefines it, inspiring all generations to strive for excellence in every aspect of life,” said Heath Golden, chief executive officer of Marquee Brands. “She is the very definition of an icon: timeless, innovative and ever-evolving.”

As Stewart herself likes to say, “When you’re through changing, you’re through.”

Now, with 2025 coming into focus, Stewart knows many people, women especially, are wrestling with the future. Despite the uncertainty ahead, Stewart is encouraging everyone to step it up, confidentially and with purpose. “Be positive. Don’t be afraid of anything. Go for it,” she said.

Martha Stewart will never stop going for it.

She’s the ultimate icon.

Capping off another incredible year of major achievements, Martha Stewart will receive the Icon Award at the FN Achievement Awards on Dec. 4.

In 2024, the image maker once again proved she’s unstoppable, from her starring role with Snoop Dogg at the Paris Olympics to the launch of her 100th book to her viral “Netflix” documentary.

Above all, the image maker understands that her ability to continually evolve is one of her most powerful attributes. “I was brought up to do what I want to do when I want to do it as well as I can do it,” said the founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, in an FN interview last year. “Something I always say is to be curious and keep learning something new every day.”

Millions of fans have been hanging on Stewart’s recommendations since 1982, when she shot to fame with her first how-to book, “Entertaining.” Her 100th title, “Martha: The Cookbook,” which released this month, is a collection of classics, and Stewart has been working tirelessly to promote the project.

Stewart also has been expanding her partnership with Skechers. In October, she appeared on QVC to promote her new collection with the brand and regularly models the kicks on Instagram.

At the FNAAs next month, Stewart will join a powerful roster of 2024 honorees at the red carpet gala and awards ceremony.

Each year, the FNAAs — often called the “Shoe Oscars” — celebrate footwear’s influential style stars, best brand stories, ardent philanthropists, emerging talents and industry veterans.

Martha Stewart Celebrates ‘Martha’ Netflix Documentary Premiere Wearing Her Go-To Robert Clergerie Platforms https://footwearnews.com/fashion/celebrity-style/martha-stewart-netflix-doc-premiere-shoes-robert-clergerie-1234723530/ Tue, 22 Oct 2024 15:23:49 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234723530

Martha Stewart celebrated the premiere of R.J. Cutler’s new Netflix documentary “Martha,” which explores her rise to fame, in a casually glamorous ensemble including platform sandals from one of her favorite brands.

As the guest of honor at the New York premiere on Oct. 21, Stewart fittingly brought some shine to the event. She selected a pair of metallic silver pants with a subtle flare to accompany a lavender zip-up jacket with a high-cut rounded neckline. The entrepreneur took her glamour to another level with a diamond necklace and gold earrings while she toted a small suitcase-shaped purse from luggage company Rimowa.

When it came down to her footwear, Stewart seemed to have selected one of her preferred silhouettes. Her platform sandal resembled a Robert Clergerie style she’s modeled on several occasions, known as the brand’s Dylan shoe. The design features a triangular peep-toe cutout in front, a rounded toe, and a thick slingback strap.

An additional standout feature is a small triangular cutout in the middle of the wedge-style sole. This particular pair had a metallic shine that aligned with Stewart’s pants and a texture resembling the brand’s snakeskin version of the Dylan style.

Last year, Stewart attended the premiere of the film “About My Father” wearing a green velour tracksuit with a green suede iteration of the Dylan sandal. A true fan of the style, she wore a metallic gold version with a beige slip dress and knit sweater at the 2024 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Launch Party held in May.

“Martha” releases on Netflix on Oct. 30 and the documentary aims to tell Stewart’s story in her own words, and follows her rise as a lifestyle icon, her sudden fall and her triumphant comeback.

Martha Stewart attended Libertine’s summer 2025 runway show held at Elizabeth Street Gardens yesterday in New York. Beyond Stewart, other notable attendees included fashion designer Thom Browne.

Getting fall-ready, the television personality sported a pair of suede booties that appeared to be ankle-length. A favorite silhouette of Stewart’s, the bootie style featured neutral textural suede uppers that transitioned into sharp triangular toes and short and sturdy 2 to 3-inch block heels.

The suede uppers and neutral color palette evoked fall vibes while the block heel component offered Stewart a subtle boost in height. Suede styles are a favorite of many stars, given the finish diversifies any classic silhouette.

Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, Vince, Dolce Vita, Marc Fisher and Madewell are just a few brands with shippable ankle-length suede booties of all kinds for a variety of price points. Blake Lively, Queen Camilla, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence have all worn suede boots in the past, turning the fall-centric style into a closet staple.

Getting whimsical, Stewart sported a floral-printed look, likely from Libertine. The star’s ensemble included a length coat, tailored trousers, a breezy blouse and a matching silk scarf wrapped around her neck. Additionally, the author wore gold jewelry, imparting a shiny touch. Libertine is best known for its use of striking prints and patterns, utilizing color in a strategic way that draws the eye.

Stewart usually pairs her red carpet ensembles with neutral and metallic gold pointed-toe pumps and sandals, hailing from her go-to shoe brand: Manolo Blahnik. However, the “Martha Knows Best” host has also donned styles from brands like Louboutin, Celine and Valentino as well.
