The History of adidas Forum Shoes

Like many popular street sneakers, the adidas Forum was born as a basketball shoe. Renowned French shoe designer Jacques Chassaing had a heavy hand in bringing the original style to life in 1983. He spent months observing famous basketball players through games and practices and looked for ways to create an even better basketball shoe than adidas’ popular Top Ten sneaker. With watchful eyes and conversations with coaches and players, Chassaing realized that many basketball shoes didn’t support the ankle. As a result, the adidas Forum was born. 

The first adidas Forum silhouette in 1984 was the Forum High. The style stood out with its innovative velcro system that protected the ankle, a patented Dellinger Web (nylon netting around the midsole designed to absorb any shock), and quality leather uppers and straps. That same year, the shoe received a very public stamp of approval from Michael Jordan, who wore them during the Olympic basketball trials in the USA. Quickly, footwear fans everywhere yearned for the shoes, and adidas unveiled low- and mid-top versions in order to keep up with the growing demand. 

In 2020, adidas revived its revolutionary basketball shoes under its adidas Originals line and re-introduced the adidas Forums. Skaters and sneakerheads soon adopted the silhouette, helping transition it from the basketball court to an everyday casual shoe. Celebrities and influencers have helped the adidas Forum stay relevant for almost 40 years. Kendall Jenner, A$AP Rocky, Bad Bunny, and many more A-listers have been spotted wearing the style over the years with everything from jeans and graphic tees to sweatsuits. 

Forum shoes, whether the Forum Low, Mid, High, or platform iterations, have been the focus of numerous collaborations over the years, partnering with streetwear brands like Shoe Palace and Bape, fictional characters like Hello Kitty, and food brands such as M&M’s. More recently, adidas designed a popular holiday trio of sneakers inspired by “The Grinch” in fall 2023 and teamed up with Packer last spring on a range of muted pastel colorways to dress the Forum Low.

The Different Types of adidas Forum Sneakers

• adidas Forum Low: The Forum Lows launched in the ’90s to complement the high-top styles. These kept the same snug, secure feel around the ball of the foot but with a shorter ankle. They feature a leather and synthetic upper for durability, a terry lining for comfort, and a classic rubber cupsole. While the shoe is offered for both men and women, the men’s style differs from the women’s because it includes the velcro ankle closure, while the women’s style just has laces. • adidas Forum High: Keep it classic with the shoe that started it all: the adidas Forum High. The Forum High is the OG forum shape with a high ankle, plenty of support, and a shock-absorbing sole. The Forum High 84 (re: its launch in 1984) is the shoe’s original shape and style, but is redone in high-end leather.
• adidas Forum Bold: adidas Forum Bold Sneakers are thick, chunky, and everything you want in a sneaker. The Bold is a female silhouette with the feel of a Forum but is done up in an even chunkier platform outsole. These are often dropped in bright, bold colors to match the standout aesthetic.
• adidas Forum Mid: The adidas Forum Mids hit that not-too-high, not-too-low sweet spot. They have more ankle support than the Low but with the vintage yet modern look of the High. Many Forum Mid styles have been re-designed with upcycled plastic waste called Parley as part of adidas’ promise to produce more sustainable sneakers.
• adidas Forum Low ADV: adidas made over its basketball sneaker for skateboarding with its Heitor Forum 84 Low ADV, created in collaboration with pro skateboarder Heitor da Silva. They’re made with an EVA midsole and a subtle but cool upper.
• adidas Forum XLG Shoes: The Forum XLG shoe takes chunky sneaker trends to the max. Platform rubber soles and high-contrast colorways define this bold sneaker. Compared to the similar Forum Bold silhouette, the XLG is more robust in profile, with added elements like X overlays and double-layered tongues.

Fans of the timeless Adidas Samba sneaker always have plenty to choose from. There are original-styled pairs, vegan versions, deconstructed designs and high-profile collaborations. Adding to the vast selection is a new Italian-made Samba style which is a contender for the most premium pair the brand has released yet — as well as the most expensive.

Following the July launch of a croc-textured, made-in-Italy Samba in black, Adidas is once again calling upon Italian factories for a new premium version of the sneaker. This time around, the classic Samba takes on a “Vachetta Tan” color scheme for a classy look that could very well pass as a dress shoe if not for its Three Stripes branding. 

The brown-colored Samba features a hand-polished calf leather upper with a leather lining sourced from Italy. According to Adidas, the liner was constructed with the Italian Sacchetto technique, a comfort-focused method which results in a more naturally flexible feel compared to traditional shoemaking.

To further the luxe look, the shoes are finished with hand-painted details. A gum rubber sole helps maintain the shoe’s iconic look. The sneakers come packaged in a special “Made in” box complete with individual dust bags for the left and right shoes. 

In January and March, Adidas issued its first made-in-Italy Samba OGs in “Core Black” and “Core White,” respectively.

Due to its made-in-Italy construction and premium materials, this Adidas Samba also comes with an increased price tag. While standard versions of the Samba OG retail for $100, the made-in-Italy iteration is priced at $350. In comparison, JJJJound’s made-in-Germany Samba was priced at $250, making the Italian pairs the most expensive Sambas yet.

When it comes to decision time, the construction of your adidas skate shoes is as important as the style. Whether you choose suede, canvas, or leather — or opt for a thicker sole over one with less cushioning — it all comes down to personal preference and the type of activity you’ll be performing most in them. 

• Upper construction: Suede has long been the standard for adidas skate shoes not only because it’s super durable and holds its own against scrapes and scuffs, but aesthetically speaking, the material has a look evocative of funky vintage styles. Leather is another common choice and though it’s a bit stiffer, the hard-wearing material touts the same benefits as suede, looks sleek, and can take a lot of abuse, meaning once you break the shoe in it’ll be in your life for a long time. Meanwhile, canvas is definitely less tough than the two. On the flip side, it still boasts breathability, a lightweight feel, and a nice casual appearance that pairs well with practically anything in your closet. Underneath the upper construction, many shoes have a layer of rubber that provides extra security; if the top material starts to wear down you have reinforcement to keep the shoe from falling apart. adidas coined this security blanket as AdiTuff, but every brand has a different name for it. 

• Outer sole: adidas skate shoes have two types of outer soles: vulcanized and cupsole. Designers construct the former by molding the sole to the upper part of the shoe through a chemically heated process and attaching it using a strip of thin rubber material known as foxing tape. This type of sole is more flexible and is great for low-impact, technical skating because it gives you a closer feel to the board and allows you to have better control over your movements. As a bonus, vulcanized outer soles often require a shorter break-in period. On the other hand, a cupsole is sewn to the upper part of the shoe and gives the wearer further distance from the board. It’s thicker than a vulcanized outer sole, thereby offering more impact protection. And, with added cushioning, shoes with a cupsole sometimes have more arch support and could last longer since their soles are less likely to separate from the upper part of the shoe. 

• Level of comfort: Whether you plan on anchor grinding in your adidas skate shoes or taking them for a stroll around town, they should be flexible, breathable, and have plenty of support. Look for perforations along the tongue or collar of the shoes that allow for increased airflow. Since they’re super lightweight, shoes with a canvas material are a nice choice here if you’re prone to excessively sweaty feet or you’ve noticed that your sneakers start to feel claustrophobic in warmer weather. You may also want something with a cushioned sole, like the comfort-plus memory foam lining found in many adidas skate shoes. Some pairs even have a special kind of cushioning unique to the brand called adiPRENE, which is a thick blue internal lining that features ridges and has ultimate cushioning. Finally, for those who need the most support, try choosing an adidas skate shoe with the cupsole outer sole, as these are made of a thicker material and have extra padding.

• Fit: It’s important that your adidas skate shoes are snug everywhere, especially around the toe area since extra space here can impact your tricks, make them less precise, and could lead to more wipe-outs. Although, those with a wider foot can afford a little more room and may even benefit from a broader toe cap. Additionally, whereas shoes with a bootie-type fit, such as a mid or high-rise cut, have more ankle protection, low-top styles, like slides, might be optimal for narrow feet since this design is typically longer, slimmer, and less bulky and they offer the most mobility.  If you have flat feet, look for shoes for flat feet designed with plenty of padding, such as the thick rubber outer soles of cupsole shoes that have more arch support, and ones with EVA foam insoles that will also help provide shock-absorption.

How to Clean adidas Skate Shoes

adidas skate shoes are made highly durable for years’ worth of wear, but that doesn’t mean your clean kicks won’t endure the occasional skid mark or mud stain. We recommend cleaning your adidas skate shoes section by section, focusing on the outsole, the uppers, and the laces. Start by removing the laces, scrubbing them in a bowl of warm water and bleach, and letting them soak until you’ve finished cleaning the rest of your shoes. Then, squeeze any excess water out of them by pressing a towel on top of the laces before lacing them back through your shoes.

For the uppers, it’s important to properly clean special materials to avoid unnecessary damage like water spots or fading.

• How to clean leather adidas skate shoes: While you can purchase a special adidas sneaker cleaning solution, dish soap and warm water also work just fine on leather uppers. The History of adidas Running Shoes

adidas has a storied past that starts with good old fashioned sibling rivalry, set in Bavaria, Germany. In 1924, brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler founded a shoe company called “Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik” or “Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory.” The Dassler brand enjoyed early success at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin (the first televised Olympics) when African American athlete Jesse Owens wore the brand’s durable leather sneakers. But by 1949, a spat between the brothers led Adolf “Adi” Dassler to create his own footwear brand, “Adi Dassler adidas Sportschuhfabrik” — which is now the modern-day adidas brand. That same year, adidas created a shoe featuring the hallmark three stripes.
