The company behind Reebok’s operations is laying off employees in the brand’s footwear business as it reworks the licensing strategy for the brand.

Authentic confirmed to FN that SPARC group, the lifestyle brand operator that operates Reebok through a license with the parent company, has reorganized Reebok’s footwear business as it looks to transfer licenses to new partners and focus more deeply on apparel. Authentic did not confirm which specific footwear divisions were impacted by the cuts, but employees in merchandising, design, product management, talent acquisition and innovation shared on LinkedIn this week that their roles had been eliminated to to a restructuring at Reebok.

The news represents the latest turmoil to plague the heritage brand this year. Earlier this month, Authentic terminated its license with New Guards Group (NGG), a division of Farfetch, to distribute Reebok footwear and apparel in Europe. Under the terms of the former deal, NGG had operated the European operations of Reebok’s branded retail stores and e-commerce, and worked to drive wholesale distribution for the label.

When Authentic acquired Reebok in 2022, chief executive officer Jamie Salter outlined a goal for the brand to hit $10 billion in annual retail sales globally by the next five years. Authentic also planned to grow Reebok’s digital business, as well as lean into the footwear and apparel designs that have made Reebok unique. Shortly after the deal closed, the company announced multiple plans for licensing and distributing Reebok across the globe. At the time, Reebok laid off 150 employees, most of whom were based in Boston.

Kerby Jean-Raymond also left his role as global creative director of Reebok in March of 2022.

Angel Reese Declares ‘This Is Just the Beginning’ While Accepting the Style Influencer of the Year Award at FNAA 2024 https://footwearnews.com/business/business-news/angel-reese-fnaa-2024-style-influencer-of-the-year-1234737885/ https://footwearnews.com/business/business-news/angel-reese-fnaa-2024-style-influencer-of-the-year-1234737885/#respond Thu, 05 Dec 2024 02:07:16 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234737885

Although her confidence is unwavering in seemingly everything she does, WNBA star Angel Reese shared a vulnerable moment on stage Wednesday night at Cipriani South Street in New York at the 38th annual FN Achievement Awards.

“I’m 22 years old, I’m still figuring life out, but this is just the beginning,” Reese said while accepting her Style Influencer of the Year award.

However, if she needed a reminder of all the incredible things that she accomplished in 2024, multihyphenate Tobe Nwigwe was there to run down many of her accolades.

“I’m here to present the FN Style Influencer of the Year award to a woman that has had a monumental year,” Nwigwe said. “She’s a WNBA All-Star, we are both part of the Reebok family, she’s an entrepreneur, fashion influencer and inspiration to the next generation. She is unapologetically herself on and off the court. She continues to carve out her own place in the world, and fans worldwide have embraced her for her outspoken personality, authenticity and a dedication to the game.”

After thanking her family for their consistent and unwavering support, the Chicago Sky forward shared her gratitude for Reebok, the athletic brand that has backed her since 2023.

“I want to give a huge shout out to Reebok for just believing in me and bringing my vision to life, for everything I ever wanted to do with them and am continuing to do with them. My dreams have already come true. They’ve given me the platform to be myself, unapologetically myself,” Reese said.

With more people than ever before tuning into the WNBA this past season, Reese solidified herself both as a force on the basketball court and as a certified style star off of it.

Specifically with Reebok, she launched her first collection with the athletic brand, dubbed Reebok by Angel, in July. The collection featured several performance and lifestyle selections, including new-look versions of the BB 4000 II, the Premier Road VI and the Classic Leather.

Also, Reese debuted the Engine A on the court in August. The model is Reebok’s first performance basketball shoe release since the early 2010s.

Perhaps most importantly, both Reese and Reebok teased a signature shoe that will arrive in 2026.

Aside from her work with Reebok, Reese’s undeniable influence was quickly recognized as soon as she arrived in the pros. The Chicago Sky forward’s fans almost immediately adopted the moniker, “Reese’s Pieces,” which was also noticed by the iconic Hershey Company candy. This led to multiple limited-edition collection of apparel that was eaten up by her legions of fans.

She has also made inroads in the world of high fashion. For instance, she attended several industry events, such as the Met Gala in May, the CFDA Fashion Awards in October, a pre-Olympics event at Fondation Louis Vuitton in July and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in October.

For 38 years, the annual FN Achievement Awards — often called the “Shoe Oscars” — have celebrated the style stars, best brand stories, ardent philanthropists, emerging talents and industry veterans. The 2024 event is supported by sponsors Listrak, Marc Fisher, Nordstrom and Vibram.

Tobe Nwigwe and his wife Martica Ivory “Fat” Nwigwe attended the 38th annual FN Achievement Awards held tonight at the iconic Cipriani South Street venue in New York. During the event, Tobe and his wife will be presenting basketball star Angel Reese with the Style Influencer of the Year award.

The rapper couple opted for a bold look, gracing the red carpet in matching pre-season “salmon” kicks from Reebok. The sneaker is a tease for the brand’s collection launching in Q1, Reebok confirmed. The high-top boot-esque hybrid included salmon-colored mixed leather and suede uppers accompanied by bulbous rounded toes and coordinating pink lace-up closures.

Both pairs were chunky and street style-inspired, incorporating utilitarian touches like pull tabs and sturdy non-slip rubber soles. The brand’s crosshatched logo can be found fixed to the top of each toe box, making the shoe’s origins instantly recognizable.

The couple and their children recently appeared in a campaign for Reebok. The 2024 collaboration between the hallowed brand and the rapper builds upon Reebok’s long history and legacy of working with leading hip-hop artists and creatives. The collaborative partnership features co-designed footwear and apparel offerings across fashion and lifestyle categories.

Keeping up their matching streak, the performing couple sported chocolate brown baggy ensembles. Tobe wore a zip-up jacket and baggy shorts while Martica wore the same jacket, but switched out the shorts for a long maxi skirt on the bottom.

After a successful run playing college basketball at LSU that included a national championship, Reese entered the WNBA in April to tremendous fanfare. And it didn’t take long for her fans to adopt a fitting moniker: “Reese’s Pieces.”

Angel Reese Was the FNAA 2024 Style Influencer We All Needed This Year https://footwearnews.com/business/business-news/angel-reese-style-influencer-of-the-year-fnaa-2024-1234736815/ Mon, 02 Dec 2024 18:00:00 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234736815

On Dec. 4, Angel Reese will be honored with the Style Influencer of the Year award at the 38th annual FN Achievement Awards. Below is an article from the magazine’s Dec. 2 print issue about the WNBA star’s bold take on fashion.

You know you’ve made it when your fans have chosen a name for themselves.

After a successful run playing college basketball at LSU that included a national championship, Angel Reese entered the WNBA in April to tremendous fanfare. And it didn’t take long for her fans to adopt a fitting moniker: “Reese’s Pieces.”

“It’s been unreal watching them embrace ‘Reese’s Pieces,’ because it’s more than a fan base,” Reese told FN last month. “It’s a family and it’s shown me the incredible power of community.”

Even the iconic Hershey Company candy took notice of the hooper’s influence, and in August, a partnership was formed that yielded a limited-edition collection of apparel.

Beyond the fun and lighthearted, Reese has quickly made inroads in the world of high fashion.

For instance, she was front and center at some of this year’s buzziest industry events, including the Met Gala in May (on her 22nd birthday), the CFDA Fashion Awards in October, a pre-Olympics event at Fondation Louis Vuitton in July and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in October (which she vowed to walk in one day).

“Attending [these] events definitely changed my perspective. It’s given me a window into just how powerful fashion can be as a form of expression,” Reese said. “With that said, I’m also a firm believer in being unapologetically yourself, wearing what makes you feel confident, and not worrying about what other people think no matter where you are.”

Fashion observers applaud Reese’s entry into the luxury world. “The fashion community continues to embrace her growing influence, recognizing her not just as an athlete venturing into fashion, but as a serious entrepreneur whose impact extends beyond the court,” said Velissa Vaughn, veteran publicist and founder of the style-focused WNBA Tunnel Instagram account.

She added that Reese’s style stands out because of its “youthful, free-spirited essence,” which was regularly on display with her show-stopping tunnel ‘fits during the season.

A Style Natural

Although Reese has rightfully earned her place among the style elite, she is quick to acknowledge those who have inspired her, both on and off the court. “I pull inspiration from so many style icons, but I have always loved Zendaya and Rihanna’s style. They’re fearless and really push the envelope,” she said. “On the court, I pull from all the greats like Sheryl Swoopes and Lisa Leslie, who made it look effortless and powerful.”

But she also follows her own instincts to create a look that is uniquely her own. “Fashion is such a creative outlet for me, so it’s about taking those influences and reimagining them in ways that represent my own journey,” she said.

While Reese primarily styles herself for tunnel ’fits and day-to-day looks, she has worked with pros including Jermaine Dailey and Naomi Elizée on some of this year’s most high-profile moments.

Her love of fashion has manifested itself most notably with Reebok, the athletic brand she has been aligned with since 2023.

Together, they launched the Reebok by Angel collection in August.

Todd Krinsky, chief executive officer of the athletic brand, said the hoops star fits right in with the company. “Angel is a Reebok athlete through and through, in part because she’s so much more than a player” he said. “Her interests are unique, she doesn’t worry about what everyone else thinks, and her authenticity shines through. It’s akin to the ’90s and early 2000s, when Allen Iverson was coming up with Reebok.”

Reese first teased her work with the brand in July during a tunnel walk, with the debut range hitting retail a month later. The line featured several performance and lifestyle selections, including three of Reebok’s most popular shoes — the BB 4000 II, the Premier Road VI and the Classic Leather — reimagined by Reese.

Her next collections will arrive in 2025, when Krinsky said consumers will get to see more of Reese’s unique fashion perspective. “Angel has been heavily involved in the design process for her 2025 product. She’s been hands-on, so you’ll start to see her influence showing up across next year’s range,” he said.

Angel the Designer

The athlete has also been instrumental in Reebok’s renewed focus on sports performance. For instance, in August, Reese debuted the Engine A, Reebok’s first performance basketball shoe release since the early 2010s. The sneakers aren’t due to arrive until spring 2025, but Reese’s appearances wearing them on the court set social media abuzz and established a strong start for the new silhouette.

“She’s not only one of the biggest stars in women’s basketball, but one of the biggest stars in all of sports. Her wearing Engine A and revealing the shoe for the first time, it will forever live within that context, on the foot of a modern superstar,” Krinsky said.

Angel Reese debuted the new Reebok Engine A basketball sneaker on the court Sept. 6.

Additionally, Reese and Reebok have been continuously teasing her upcoming signature shoe, which is scheduled to arrive in 2026. Signature shoes are a rarity in the WNBA, so when her look hits retail shelves, Reese will join the ranks of the league’s stars including Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and A’ja Wilson.

“I’m excited and grateful. Getting a signature shoe has always been a dream of mine. I hope it sends a message to young women and girls everywhere that anything is possible,” Reese said.

While Reebok has been tight-lipped about details, Reese did share some insights into what consumers can expect.

“We’re building a shoe that looks great and performs just as well, no compromises on either end,” she explained. “Aesthetically, this shoe is true to my vision and will be unmistakable from any seat in the arena. From a performance perspective, whether it’s on my feet, my teammates, an NBA superstar or a young girl in high school, it has to be comfortable, stable and responsive.”

And when it comes to her relationship with Reebok, Reese said the sports brand has been an “incredible partner” during the development of the sneaker. “We’re pumped to share it with the world,” she said.

Great Feats

Reese’s accomplishments also extend well beyond sports and style.

When asked about her greatest achievement this year, she highlighted earning her degree in interdisciplinary studies from LSU, with concentrations and minors in communication studies, leadership development and psychology.

“[This] feels like proof of the endless possibilities out there for athletes and a reminder that there’s no limit to what we can do on or off the court,” she said.

What’s more, Reese was also active with her investments in women’s sports in 2024.

For instance, she was announced in May as a founding investor in DC Power Football Club, a new professional women’s soccer team in Washington, D.C.

She also will compete during the WNBA off-season in Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 basketball league founded by Stewart and Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx. All players in the league will have six-figure salaries and receive ownership equity.

“Growing women’s sports across the board is important to me, so I welcome all potential opportunities to invest in them further,” Reese said. “Beyond that, I also want young women to see they can have a voice in different industries, build generational wealth and claim ownership in spaces where we’ve historically been overlooked.”

More people than ever before tuned into the WNBA this past season, and many of those eyes were on Angel Reese — both on and off the court. Aside from her basketball accolades, she also solidified herself as a certified style star.

At the 38th annual FN Achievement Awards ceremony, to be held Dec. 4 in New York, the 22-year-old hooper will be recognized with the Style Influencer of the Year Award, an honor that has previously been bestowed on the likes of Storm Reid, J Balvin, Cardi B, Law Roach, Nicole Richie and Hailey Baldwin, among others.

“I am so honored to be recognized by Footwear News as this year’s Style Influencer,” said Reese. “For me, personal style is about seizing the moment and expressing who you are with unapologetic confidence. There’s no playbook for personal style, which makes fashion so empowering. Working with Reebok has been a dream because they truly support my vision and collaborate with me throughout the design process to create pieces that are authentically me. Together, we hope to inspire others to embrace their unique style with the same confidence.”

Her undeniable influence was quickly recognized as soon as she arrived in the pros. The Chicago Sky forward’s fans almost immediately adopted the moniker, “Reese’s Pieces,” which was also noticed by the iconic Hershey Company candy. This led to a limited-edition collection of apparel that was eaten up by her legions of fans.

As reported, many big names are receiving FNAA awards this year, including A$AP Rocky and Puma for collaboration of the year, Adidas CEO Bjórn Gulden for Person of the Year and many more. Another major award will be revealed in the coming days.

How to Properly Dry Your Sneakers: The Dos And Don’ts of Caring for Wet Shoes https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/how-to-properly-dry-sneakers-1234730162/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 21:39:55 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234730162

Per Google Trends, a significant amount of people are wondering about the best way to go about caring for their sneakers — more specifically, they want to know how to dry them when they get wet or washed, and if it’s OK to put them in the dryer.

While seasoned sneakerheads might know the answer to this question, FN understands that not every shoe box comes with a manual that tells you what to do when your sneakers are wet. Laundering shoes can be quite the undertaking. Some materials in particular should not go in the washer or dryer, namely leather, suede, vinyl and rubber; shoes with metal cleats should also stay out of the machines.

While we’re officially in the cooler months, sneakers are a year-round go-to shoe — so we understand why people are researching how to care for their athletic footwear. So below, find steps on what to do and what not to do when it’s time to dry your sneakers.

black and brown canvas shoes drying

Air drying is your best bet

While it may not be the speediest option, air drying your sneakers is the best and safest option. After cleaning or washing your sneakers, put them in a well-ventilated area, or outside, and let them air dry. If possible, remove the insoles and shoe laces and allow the air to get inside the shoe. It may take a few days before the shoe is thoroughly dry and able to be worn again, so give this process a few days.

Avoid putting sneakers in a clothes dryer

While it’s okay to put certain shoes in the washing machine, depending on their material, it’s not typically recommended to throw your favorite footwear in the dryer afterward — the heat and tumbling poses a threat to the size and fit of the shoe, causing them to shrink, and can cause damage beyond that as well — like melting in some cases. Sneakers are typically held together with a glue that might not survive your dryer temperature. So while the dryer might seem temptingly efficient, it’s better to let your sneakers air dry to preserve their integrity.

The sun can also damage your shoes

Leaving your shoes outside or by a window can help speed up the drying process. Beware, however, of placing your clean sneakers in direct sunlight, which can wear them out and alter the color; leaving them in a ventilated indoor space away from the sun is a safer choice.

Newspaper can help dry wet sneakers

Another way to address a wet shoe is to stuff it with newspaper, since the material is absorbent and malleable. For this method, Nike specifically suggests trying to hide areas with a great deal of ink to avoid staining the shoe. The footwear giant also says that the newspaper can be replaced along the way if needed. If you want to expedite the process of drying your sneakers, try using a fan. Read more about Nike’s drying recommendations here.

Direct heat is dangerous

While it might be tempting to place your sneakers in front of a space heater, radiator or in an oven (which is a huge no-no and completely dangerous), not only will this not help, it might instead leave you shoeless, or worse. Direct heat can make sneakers bend or melt, leave burn marks and damage your sneakers. As an alternative, a cold air fan or air conditioner at a distance can help speed up the drying process and protect the quality of leather or suede shoes.

Angel Reese, Anuel AA, Justin Fields and More Star in Reebok’s New ‘Sport is Everything’ Campaign https://footwearnews.com/business/business-news/angel-reese-anuel-aa-reebok-sport-is-everything-campaign-1234729934/ Tue, 12 Nov 2024 15:54:16 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234729934

The stars came out for Reebok’s new campaign.

The athletic brand revealed “Sport Is Everything” today, a 60-second campaign featuring its ambassadors from the worlds of sports, music and more. The effort, Reebok explained, was created to show “sport is not confined by definitions.” It features music and narration from rapper and Reebok partner Tobe Nwigwe.

There are 10 brand ambassadors in the spot, which shows them on their “home court.” The talent in the campaign includes WNBA star Angel Reese, Puerto Rican musician Anuel AA, NFL quarterback Justin Fields, boxing champion Shakur Stevenson and several others.

“There are few other brands that have lived at the intersection of sports and culture like Reebok has throughout its history,” Reebok chief executive officer Todd Krinsky said in a statement. “This anthem is an expression of our unique point of view on sport, of what it is, and what it can be.”

Reebok further explained that “Sport is Everything” takes viewers “on a motivational intercontinental journey exploring the many ways in which sport can come to life” and that “every person and passion is unique and welcomed.”

“I love the ‘Sport is Everything’ message because it’s something that resonates with all of us,” Reese said in a statement. “Whether you’re a world-class athlete, gamer, chef or musician, sport is about anything that excites you — it’s a community we can all share.”

It can be seen on streaming platforms and TV networks, including Hulu, ESPN, NBC, Paramount and more.

“This is a special moment for Reebok,” Krinsky said. “Witnessing Reebok’s evolution firsthand over the past three decades — through the many ups and downs — it’s great to get back to a place where we can deliver a powerful message that inspires people around the world. We can’t wait to share what’s next.”

Authentic Brands Group Plans to Terminate New Guards Group’s Reebok License https://footwearnews.com/business/business-news/auhentic-terminates-reebok-europe-license-new-guards-group-1234728061/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 13:13:49 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234728061

Authentic Brands Group no longer wants to do business with New Guards Group, a division of Farfetch, and has terminated its license to distribute Reebok footwear and apparel in Europe, according to a memo seen by WWD and FN.

The memo, from Farfetch-owner Coupang to staff, said New Guards Group had received a termination notice for the agreement which had granted the group distribution rights for Reebok products.

Coupang, which purchased the troubled Farfetch late last year and took over operations in February, said the termination notice came after it had tried to amend “unfavorable economic terms” within the licensing arrangements involving NGG and Authentic.

It is understood that NGG owes ABG royalty payments of around $300 million, and it remains unclear whether ABG will be able to recoup those funds.
NGG will cease operations of the Reebok EU website and sales of Reebok products immediately.

WWD has reached out to Coupang, Farfetch and ABG for comment.
Coupang, a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, is planning to issue its third-quarter results later today.

Terminating what it perceives to be unfavorable licensing agreements is part of the ABG playbook.

Earlier this year, ABG terminated a licensing deal with Arena Group, which had published Sports Illustrated, after Arena failed to make a quarterly license fee payment of $3.7 million. Arena threatened to end the print magazine and fire nearly its entire staff, but Authentic found another operator, Minute Media, and reinstated the employees.

The termination of the Reebok deal could point to bigger problems for NGG going forward as Coupang continues to focus on the Farfetch fashion platform.
WWD reported earlier this year that Style Capital was potentially interested in purchasing the group, but it appears that talks fizzled. No other interested parties have emerged.

New Guards Group is home to 10 international brands, which include Marcelo Burlon County of Milan, Palm Angels, Unravel Project, Heron Preston, Alanui, Peggy Gou, Ambush and There Was One.

It is also the licensee of Off-White, which was purchased by the New York-based Bluestar Alliance LLC earlier this year.
The original alliance between NGG and Reebok came on the heels of the latter’s acquisition by ABG from Adidas in 2021, a deal pegged at 2.1 billion euros.

Under the terms of the deal, NGG operated the European operations of Reebok’s branded retail stores and e-commerce, and worked to drive wholesale distribution for the label. The deal also appointed NGG as the exclusive partner to create and distribute high-end collaboration products for Reebok in more than 50 countries including the U.S., Canada and across Europe. The agreement covered footwear, sportswear and activewear for men, women and children.
NGG had high hopes for its Reebok business.

Last year, it launched the NGG++ division to operate the Reebok licenses. A few months later it beefed up management, naming Adidas alum Markus Kleber as Reebok Europe and Reebok Ltd. senior vice president and general manager, a new role.

JJJJound Is Restocking Sold-Out Sneaker Collaborations and More Rare Product https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/jjjjound-entrepot-archive-sale-1234727846/ Mon, 04 Nov 2024 16:32:48 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234727846

Streetwear’s favorite internet moodboard is looking back on its last decade of output with a special two-week pop-up event in Montreal.

JJJJound announced Wednesday its Entrepôt event, an archive sale inspired by outlet stores that seeks to change the perception around discounted goods, according to the brand.

“Entrepôt is an immersive installation that reimagines the intersection of retail overflow and industrial warehousing,” reads the event description. “The installation attempts to present archival pieces, rebated products, and overstock as part of a [sic] artful experience. By incorporating the aesthetic of an unfinished warehouse, the installation creates a raw, minimalist setting where commercial excess takes on the form of curated art.”

Preview images show a breadth of past-stock product including apparel, accessories and some of JJJJound’s most coveted sneaker collaborations. Although a full list of items was not provided, collaboration shoes previewed in the announcement include the brand’s New Balance 992, Salomon XT-Wings 2, Vans Sk8-Mid, Victory Sportswear Trail Runner (which was JJJJound’s first sneaker collab), Reebok Club C and Puma Suede.

The collaborative footwear was sold at original retail pricing and also included projects from Adidas, Blackstock & Weber, Danner, Dr. Martens, Padmore & Barnes and ROA. Meanwhile, clothing was sold at discounted prices, with JJJJound mainline products ranging from $10 CAD for souvenirs to $70 CAD for coats.

Attendees shared their pick-ups on platforms including Instagram and Reddit, with one user saying they traveled from New Jersey to Montreal for a chance to shop the sale.

On Sunday, JJJJound announced that due to higher-than-expected turnout, the pop-up would close Monday for a restock and re-open Tuesday.

The JJJJound Entrepôt event is located at 399 Saint-Jacques Street, Montreal, QC H2Y 1N9 and will run through Nov. 16. It’s open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday. Readers can find a preview of featured footwear collaborations below.
